• Define the term “job crafting” and provide examples relevant to occupational therapy practice.
• Discuss how burnout and job crafting vary across occupational therapy jobs and work settings.
• Identify job demands most predictive of burnout and job crafting in occupational therapy.
• Provide strategies to help reduce burnout among occupational therapy professionals.

Summary of the article

Burnout is a common phenomenon among occupational therapy professionals and is associated with poor health and well-being, absenteeism, staff turnover, and exit from the profession. This study identifies specific occupational therapy roles, practice settings, and job characteristics most predictive of burnout, and evaluates job crafting as a potential strategy to reduce burnout and enhance work experiences. Employers and occupational therapists can use these findings to target high-risk areas and develop resources that strengthen occupational therapists’ ability to engage in job crafting.
